A unique aim of this project was to use locally sourced and sustainable materials in a way that complements the use of recycled and re-used materials in other areas of the environmental design. So in place of the more commonly used tropical hardwood, the furniture was designed with a combination of 4 timber species that grow well in the Irish climate – Oak, Douglas Fir, Monterey Cypress and Cedar. Each piece was clearly marked so that the aging and weathering process could be monitored over the coming years. It also provides some extra interest for park visitors. 

Premium seating was strategically integrated along pathways, encouraging rest and social interaction, while framing views of the reflective garden and pollinator-friendly trees, shrubs and perennials. A playground featuring a slide, playhouse, swings and musical play pieces caters to younger visitors.

To support active and sustainable travel, the design incorporates EV charging stations and dedicated bicycle parking. Practical amenities like a drinking fountain enhance public comfort, while a dynamic recreation and fitness area promotes health.

Ultimately, the street furniture acts as an anchor to link the diverse zones into a harmonious, accessible and biodiverse public realm, that serves residents and visitors alike.
